Like many other environmental factors such as humidity, temperature, moisture and nutrients, light determines the rate of plant growth as well as the way in which the plant develops. Artificial lighting can be successfully used to supplement natural light.
Greenhouses use natural solar light. However, artificial lighting can be used to control timing of flowering or fruit set. Although artificial lighting is often used in experimental and research conditions to totally replace sunlight, this is not normally economically viable in commercial greenhouse operations.
