On page34, we reviewed some of the trends relating to the cut flower and foliage products that have been imported over recent years. Now, we can consider this information within the broad framework of the Australian industry, with an eye on moving forward towards its sustainable future.

A role for all sectors

For the industry overall, the ideal situation would be a strong and sustainable domestic production sector which fulfills   the consumer’s need for local product, while working in combination with an import sector which supplies specialised products that cannot be produced in Australia as well as traditional products at times when they are unavailable domestically, or when they cannot be produced here in sufficient quantities to meet demand.

The good news is that overall, this ideal situation is mostly already in place.
