The statistics clearly demonstrate a need to increase consumer satisfaction if cut
flower sales are to increase on the U.S. flower market. We feel that the optimal strategy to ensure the adoption of effective temperature management during transportation is to place tools for determining quality in the hands of the receivers and consumers. Inexpensive time/temperature monitors are already available for this purpose, and we expect that our continuing research directed towards ‘freshness indicators’ will provide another tool to ensure that cut flowers and other ornamentals are as fresh as possible on delivery to the ultimate consumer.
