I can clearly remember Professor Mike Reid at the University of California, Davis giving one of his regular lectures about Flower Care – and he said “The three things to remember when handling flowers are temperature, temperature and temperature!!” Fresh flowers are living organisms that have been cut off from their life support system (the plant).
It is the role of post-harvest management to not only mimic what the plant may have provided (specific flower foods and pre-treatments for each flower type)–but to provide the most optimal environment to extend the commercial and aesthetic life of the flower.
